TEACHING TECHNOLOGY THROUGH GAMIFICATION

Mr. Jobs was so spot on when he said that computers would revolutionize the way we learn. It already has. A new way of using computers to help students learn more and have fun along the way is called gamification, which has tremendous potential in the education space. Huh? What does that even mean?

Gamification [n]: the use of game design elements in non-game contexts.

Well, gamified classrooms use game design elements such as levels, experience points, and achievements to drive instruction. Gamification can be included in any classroom, regardless of subject. Imagine battling the Maniacal Multiplication Monster instead of taking a test on multiplication. And just like in video games, you get to battle this monster until you beat him. There is no more failing tests, just tackling a problem until you solve (and master) it. Or what if, after finishing an assignment early, you got to go on a content-relevant "mission" and earn experience points that could be used to redeem a free day. Talk about motivation. So in a gamified classroom, what ends up happening? Students are more engaged and successful regardless of subject. Hard to believe, right? It's actually tried and true. Check out this infographic and the links below to learn more about the effectiveness of gamification.

How to Gamify Your Classroom

Design Your Class Like a Video Game

My goal as a teacher is to incorporate as much gamification as possible into every course that I teach. With all the benefits to both me and my students, I'd be crazy not to! Because more student engagement, increased content mastery, and student driven learning is the ultimate goal of every 21st century educator and gamification is a tool that allows for all of that to be realized.
